Johnsons clean up on Finals Day
Congratulations to Lesley and Paul Johnson who triumphed in the Singles Finals
on Sturday, adding to the already creaking trophy cabinet in the Johnson
household!
Lesley won an extremely tough three-set marathon against Sue Deane. Both had
good chances to win, and when Sue won the ninth game of the final set to
go 5-4 up, the audience sensed an upset. However Lesley came back
strongly, and eventually won 7-5. This is the tenth time that Lesley has
won the Ladies trophy. Congratulations indeed.
In the men's final, Paul was up against Tim Roberts (who beat some *excellent*
players on his way to the final - Ed). Tim's job was frankly the one
that no-one else in the club fancied, namely to play against Paul but
Tim started strongly, holding serve and pushing Paul to produce his best
tennis. There was a pivotal moment in the seventh game of the first set
when Tim had a point to hold serve again to take the match to 3-4. But
Paul proved too strong and eventually won in straight sets. As Tim
breathlessly observed after the match "I was looking to play on Paul's
weak spots - but there weren't any!". Many congratulations to Paul for
an excellent win, and a worthy winner for another year.
Thanks also to Judy for organising such an enjoyable event, and to everyone
who dropped by during the afternoon.
