Charity Concert in honour of Sheila Sclater
St. Lawrence’s Church delighted in an evening of spring music played by the
brilliant Adoramus Singers fromWinchester
directed by John Lunt and the talented Laura Jurd and
Conor Chaplain fromAltonCollege.
The evening was arranged by Alton Tennis Club in memory of Sheila Sclater, an
outstanding tennis player who has for decades been a stalwart member of
the club, introducing so many juniors and adults into playing tennis.
Sheila’s family gathered along with members ofAlton
and Kingsley Tennis Club, Alton Scouts for which she was treasurer for
many years, with friends and neighbours to hear an eclectic mix of music
including Latin Easter Motets, Spring madrigals, negro spirituals and
popular pieces such as Let it Be and Gershwin’s “Summertime”. Laura and Conor produced a performance that stunned the audience
with their sensitive improvisations on trumpet, bass and keyboard. Both are currently studying atAltonCollege,
who also kindly supported the event.
The Charity Concert raised £1,650 in aid of St. Michael’s Hospice, the charity
chosen by Sheila. Sue Hubbard, from Alton Tennis Club
Committee said “It was a fitting tribute to someone who had done so much
for so many people in our Community”.
