Congratulations to Sheila Sclater - Alton veteran sportswoman of the
year!
Please
join us in congratulating Sheila Sclater, who was recently recognised
for her outstanding commitment and contribution to tennis in Alton. Sheila
has made a considerable contribution to Alton Tennis Club since its
inception some 12 years ago being a vital member of the Ladies Doubles
and Mixed Doubles Teams in the
Aldershot and District
Premier League. She has also been on the Committee as Match Secretary
for the whole of that period. Sheila
has also played for Kingsley Tennis Club in the Hampshire and IOW and
East Hampshire top Divisions, captaining the East Hants Ladies Team for
approximately 18 years. She has also represented Hampshire in the
Veteran category. Sheila
is an LTA Licensed coach at Level 2 (Club Coach Award) and is very well
known in the area, working in a number of Clubs and Schools. She
coached 5 to 10 year olds at Kingsley on Saturday mornings for about 13
years, without missing a session! Perhaps
her greatest achievement so far is winning the British Women’s Tennis
Association Ladies Doubles Masters Event in 2006 with her daughter, who
now lives in the North. This is a national competition, that has
normally taken place atWimbledon,
where 16 regional finalists compete in an Event to decide on the overall
national champions. This
would be a great achievement on its own, but Sheila was diagnosed with
cancer a few years ago, and has carried on regardless throughout the
whole time of her treatment to the point where opposing teams would have
hardly noticed the difference! We
all admire her.
