Alton Players dominate BWTA Masters
Event
The British Women's Tennis Association
organised 12 one day tournaments throughout the summer of 2006. The winners of each event played off in
a Masters Event on 4 & 5 November to determine the overall champions. 2 pairs with a strong Alton connection
qualified for the finals. Mother and Daughter Sheila & Jennie Sclater
won a tournament at Lymm in Cheshire. Sheila is a member of Alton &
Kingsley Tennis Clubs. Jennie was also a member of these clubs until she
moved to Manchester last year. Sue Hubbard (Alton & Kingsley ) & Lesley
Johnson (Alton) qualified for the Masters by winning a tournament at the
prestigious Queens Club in London -home of the pre Wimbledon grass court
event. In the past the Masters event has been held
at the indoor courts of the All Engand Club at Wimbledon. This
year these courts were unavailable & the event was moved to High
Wycombe. Although this was a little disappointing both couples had
previously played at Wimbledon & the new venue probably made it easier
to concentrate on the trennis & spend less time celebrity spotting ! Round robin matches were played on the
Saturday to produce 4 semi finalists. To the joy of the Altonians both
pairs made it through to the Sunday & they were kept apart in the semi
finals.. Sue & lesley lost their semi final to a strong pair who had
previously won the Masters on several occassions. To their joy they were
then able to cheer Sheila & Jennie on to victory in the final in which
they produced a display of thrilling and skilful tennis. It was a brilliant achievement by all of
the Alton players
